While working overseas is a new chapter of your career, and there are many things you need to prepare for. This is a check list of things you should be aware of before and after you have started off the interview process with an overseas company:

1) Plan for family: if you are married with children, very likely you will relocate with your whole family together.  So when you have decided to pursuse a job overseas, it is important to get your family involved in the process and draw out the plan together e.g. does your spouse need to look for a job together?  Do you need to gather information for schooling for your children?  Should I sell or rent out my property? Who look after my infant or parents in another country?  Gathering information and working out the plan will be a long process and it may affect your job application, therefore you should have a thorough discussion with family upfront.

2) Rental: Company usually provide assistance for looking for property when you relocate, and some candidates only start to look for property when they arrive into the new location.  Having said that it will be helpful to gather information about rental in advance for early planning: for example, what is the budget range for my rental?  Where should I move to?  What assistance will the company provide?  Also some properties require tenants to pay for certain amount of fund in advance as deposit, do I have the amount or who will cover the cost?  Also your budget of rental may affect your salary expectation, if you have such budget in mind it will facilitate your discussion about salary with your prospective employer.

3) Visa application and restriction: There is different visa application time length and process in different countries, some can take as short as 2 months, some can be 4 months or even more, and the visa application time may affect your resignation with current employer, also in some countries there are certain restrictions on working visa, so it will be helpful to get a rough idea about visa application time with your recruiter or company you have interview with.
