OK I have decided to step out from comfort zone and pursue an overseas job opportunity, but there are so many roles and different locations, where should I start the process?

Here are some clues that can help you to make a decision on where to relocate:

1. Purposes for relocation: first you have to ask yourself, what are your purposes for relocation?  Is it for you to stay closer to family who live remotely?  To work in an international location to gain better job exposure?  Or even to lay a path to gain a citizenship in future?  In Hong Kong, citizenship can be granted for someone living in Hong Kong for 7 years consecutively. All these questions will lead you to different locations.

2. Discuss with family and friends: Relocating internationally is a big decision not only to yourself, but also to your family, so it is important to discuss with family and friends at early stage and ask for their input throughout the process.  We experienced some candidates turning down their dream offers because of family's objection, and it is a let down to all parties (especially the candidates) because of the time and effort involved!

3. What are my advantages?  While companies may not always prioritise expatriates because of relocation cost and different restrictions, certain advantages will definitely give you competitive edges over other candidates.  For example, Indonesia and China cross-border transaction experiences are highly valuable in Singapore deal market; on the other hand, Chinese languages are highly advantageous in Hong Kong, Singapore and China and other locations with business network with China.  Match your advantages to corresponding roles/markets will definitely help you to get your desired role, or even promotion in future.

4. Research into tax rate and living cost: Moving to other countries do not always guarantee you a steep pay rise, in Hong Kong, although its tax rate is one of the lowest in the world, its rental and living cost have gone up considerably in the last few years. Researching into tax rate and living cost upfront can help you to decide if it's worthy to make a move, and facilitating your discussion on salary package with potential employers.
